The Good: The show looks good (especially in the case of foxy lead actor Jason Clarke AKA Detective Jarek Wysocki, who is taking off where James "Sawyer" Ford left off in the bestowing-of-nicknames department). It's shot really well. Chicago looks great, and the show looks like a feature film. It has the potential to be Chicago's The Wire or The Shield.
The Bad: So far, it's only potential. The tone of the show, at times, bordered on silly, like when Detective Wysocki allowed a car thief to stop off at this girlfriend's flower store to propose before being taken into custody. Also, Jennifer Beals' character seems too good to be true. We need some Vic Mackey up in this bee-yotch. The narration needs to go.
The Unfortunate: I cannot stand it when a show or movie feels the need to boil an entire city down to its stereotypes. In this one episode, the show name-checked several neighborhoods just for authenticity's sake. The Cubs-Sox rivalry was addressed. I half expected someone to get shot just for putting ketchup on her hot dog and not respecting someone's dibs all while listening to that song that makes me get all stabby, "Sweet Home Chicago," playing in the background. You'd think creator Shawn Ryan would know better being from Rockford and all. Maybe.
The Verdict: I am definitely going to keep watching. I'm hoping that most of my issues with the show were pilot-only issues. They probably felt they needed to set the Chicago stage in the first episode and will ix-nay the obvious Chicago-ese references in the future. The cast is quite good. The premise of cleaning up the city's crime and corruption is a noble one, and I hope The Chicago Code can tackle it with the weight and realism of The Wire in the future. I think this show will get really good once it gets a chance to dive further into its story.
